The idea for the book came from a chance happening - I was invited by Billee Moore of Kingsport, TN to meet the author of Refuge, and Appalachian novel at her place in North Carolina. When I arrived it was to find Billee, Dot Jackson and Dot's cousin Linda Bowie already engaged in the fine art of storytelling. I joined them at the kitchen table and we talked until 2 in the morning. It was raw, honest, funny and sometimes heartrending, but all of it was storytelling in the Appalachian tradition. The result is a book filled with the life-journey stories of some of Appalachia's finest. Read it and you'll never be the same again, just as I am changed by their stories.
